Friday Four

3 Aug

Friday Four is a collection of (you guessed it) four interesting videos, photos, links, etc., that I hope get you pumped up for the weekend.

Happy Friday, beauties!  It’s a lovely sunny day in Saint Paul and I’m oh-so excited for the weekend.  Here are some goodies to get you excited too!

  • Real Actors Read Yelp Reviews.  Yes.

  • Confession: I suck at cutting up onions.  I always set out with hopes of a uniform pile of onions and never seem to reach my goal.  I’m hoping this tutorial from Alexandra’s Kitchen leaves me chopping like a pro.

That’s it!  What amazing things do you have planned for the weekend?

Pretty Lady: Dayna

2 Aug

MargitMae is excited to bring you a feature called Pretty Lady! In each Pretty Lady, a MargitMae reader will share her favorite products that keep her lovely and healthy. If you would like to participate as a Pretty Lady (or Pretty Man!), please shoot us an e-mail – we’d love to hear from you!

Say hello to our newest Pretty Lady, Dayna!

Ladies and gents, meet the lovely Dayna.  This super lovely lady hails from the state of Minnesota but is currently living in Austin where she is studying Public Health Nursing at the University of Texas.  I met Dayna when I was in middle school though a mutual friend and immediately warmed to her bright, loving nature and gigantic, welcoming smile.  You know those people who say the most random and hilarious statements in the middle of a conversation?  The comments that leave you with tears streaming down your face  because you are laughing so hard?  That’s Dayna.  She is awesome.  When she’s not spending time studying Nursing she loves to bike, brew beer, and craft.  A natural beauty, Dayna is a great candidate for Pretty Lady.  In her own words, here are three of Dayna’s favorite products:

  • Apple Cider Vinegar It leaves you feels refreshed, and is good for the body both externally and internally.  I try to put it in salad dressing to make sure it is a part of my diet, and dilute it with water as a face wash.  It is a natural remedy for acne. I especially like how it makes my face tingle.
  • Aveda Mosscara  Organic mascara made with Icelandic moss. It goes on really smooth, and gives definition to the lashes without being chunky or too harsh.

There you have it!  Dayna’s top three for natural babe-ness.

Vapour Organic Beauty Illusionist Concealer

1 Aug

It’s time for another exciting review!  Today’s pick? Vapour Organic Beauty Illusionist Concealer .

I have searched high and low for a natural concealer that didn’t cost more than $30 and I’m pleased to announce that I’ve found one.  I very much dig Vapour Organic Beauty Illusionist Concealer – it packs a pigment punch and blends easily into the skin.  I dislike concealers that are the same consistency as liquid foundation and prefer a cream concealer.  Many cream concealers can, however, feel very dry and are hard to spread.  Not this one, friends.  Creamy, moisturizing, blend-friendly.  Awesome coverage.  Hooray.

And what’s in this stuff?  Vapour states that the product “nourishes with Vapour’s face specific infusion of anti-inflammatory Frankincense, antioxidant Tulsi and moisturizing and calming Lotus flowers”.  Anti-inflammatory?  Please pass it my way.  I generally wake up with puffy, discolored under eye circles and appreciate any help I can get. Vapour Organic Beauty Illusionist  Concealer  also contains 70% organic ingredients with the remainder of ingredients made up of natural mineral pigments and vitamins.

And in a MargitMae first, I will now show you what the product actually looks like on skin.  On my puffy, discolored under eye area.  Please ignore the fact that I am desperately in need of a new mascara as the one I’m wearing is old and prone to clumping.

Look at my giant eye and fear me!

Here is it on my hand.  I wear color 010 which is worn by those who mimic Casper the Ghost.  Fear not, non-Casperians – this concealer comes in 7 shades.

Fun fact – I learned a new camera trick to take that photo.  Apparently you can do more with point-and-shoot cameras then just, well, point and shoot.  I used the ever-exciting macro feature to take giant photos of my eyeball so you could check out my contacts.

And this is the first ever photo I took where I used a setting other than “turn the flash off”.  Be proud.  Sadly, the wine photos took a turn for the worst.

This wine has a fine nose.

Too much wine.

The shame.

What were we talking about?  Oh yes, Vapour Organic Beauty Illusionist Concealer .  It’s a fantastic concealer – for under $25, you get a creamy and effective concealer full of yummy ingredients.  Check it out and let me know what you think.

What’s your favorite concealer?  What awkward photos shoots have you made your cat participate in?

Northern Holiday

31 Jul

Evan and I recently went on a trip to the Great White North to spend some time with his family.

We split our time between the wilderness and the city.  We were able to spend a few days in a cabin, or as the Canadians would call it, a cottage. It was fantastic to spend time in both a quiet and peaceful wilderness as well as a bustling city with Evan’s brother Spencer, sister-in-law Gillian, and their two little bundles of sweetness who I will refer to as Kittens and Mittens.  What, you think I would come up with aliases that didn’t relate to felines?  Fat chance.  I could go on and on about the trip, but I’ll let photos do the talking.

We made sure that Mittens was hydrated with lots and lots of Mountain Dew.  I am, of course, kidding.  He did love the bottle for teething purposes.  Also, look at those eyes.  Just look at them and melt.  Okay, now stop looking so you can continue reading this post.

“You fools!  You thought I wanted Mountain Dew when all along I was trying to feast on delicious beer!” said Mittens.  OK, he didn’t say that.  Nor did he drink beer.  But he did knock the can out of Spencer’s hands and spill it all over which was, well, really funny.  For me.  Who was sitting across the room and escaped the beer explosion.

Speaking of drinks, Canada has come up with the perfect cottage drink.  It’s iced tea with beer in it.  I know, I know, it sounds gross.  You’ll just have to take my word that it was delicious.

Would you believe me if I told you that Canadians only use oversized remotes?

Before leaving the cabin, Evan and I gave Kittens a book to read on the car ride back to the city.  This is his serious and contemplative face, and not his angry face as I initially thought.  Thank goodness.

Prince!  What are you doing here?!?  Prince was playing everywhere we went.  And then we saw this poster.  And now I’m convinced that Prince is stalking me.

Ah, back to city and back to the civilized world where we can feast on fanciful delicacies like … poutine?  Yes, friends, poutine is tasty.  Fries, curds, gravy.  Eat it.  If you live in the Twin Cities, might I recommend satiating your poutine fix at the Strip Club Meat & Fish?

There it is – the fancy food.  We feasted on delicious bites from the sea at Rodney’s.  We ate lots and lots of oysters and were very happy people.

Except for when Gillian looked at the table next to ours and saw that a man on a date was, instead of talking to said date, playing a game on an iPad.  Gillian wanted to invite her over to our table for oysters.  I think Gillian looks like a sassy model in this photo.

We love oysters, yes we do!  We love oysters, how ’bout you?

Did I mention we went to a baseball game?  We did.  It was awesome.  It was hot.  It was baseball-y.

Kittens was impressed.  So impressed that he actually watched about twenty minutes of the game, which I think is pretty darn impressive for a little guy.

Kittens was naughty and tried to run away from his dad.  Until he got tired and plunked down on the sidewalk.  I should have looked stern and serious instead of busting out in giggles but, guys, look at the sign above him!

All in all, we had an amazing time and so enjoyed spending time with Spencer, Gillian, Kittens, and Mittens.  We can’t wait to visit again and see what sign the little guys will sit under next time.

Weekend Update!

30 Jul

Happy Monday, lovely readers!  MargitMae is back after a short hiatus!

I have some great things in store for you this week – a new product review, a fantastic Pretty Lady, and some exciting news!  But now, it’s time to recap the weekend.

I spent Friday evening at a Twins game with my awesome father and Evan.  The Twins crushed the Cleveland Indians.  Did I mention that we had amazing seats?

Well, hello there, Josh Willingham.

Evan and I also ate copious amounts of seafood.  Oyster Bloody Mary shooters at Meritage, seafood carbonara at the Happy Gnome … it was a delicious weekend.

So what awesome things did you eat and see this weekend?

EO Renew Rose and Chamomile Bubble Bath

27 Jun

Confession: I love baths.  I love setting aside time to relax and let the worries and cares of the day slowly slip away.  And what makes a bath even more enjoyable?  Bubbles!

In my search for some Mother’s Day gifts for my awesome mom, I stumbled upon EO’s line of bubble baths.  I ended up selecting the rose and chamomile scent as it smelled lovely and promised to ‘renew’.    My mom really enjoyed these bath bubbles so I knew I had to give them a shot and was I ever pleased.

Marshmallow, jojoba, and lemon balm extracts soften and sooth the skin while rose and chamomile essential oils leave your skin deliciously fragrant.  I absolutely adore the scent of this bubble bath; while rose-scented products sometimes smelly murky and musty, the combination of rose and chamomile smells slightly sweet and incredibly invigorating.  I know using the word ‘invigorating’ might sound strange in describing a scent, but you’ll have to take my word for it – this stuff smells amazing.

Some other awesome aspects of EO Rose and Chamomile Bubble Bath?  A bottle of this stuff costs less than $12.  In addition, it’s insanely concentrated; a tiny, tiny amount of this product will give you a bathtub bursting with long-lasting bubbles.  My mother made the initial mistake of using too much product and ended up with a bathroom full of bubbles.  Use only a bit of this stuff if you’d prefer a bathtub of bubbles over a bathroom of bubbles.

If you’re looking for a little extra something to add to your bath, grab a bottle of EO Rose and Chamomile Bubble Bath.  You leave the tub relaxed, renewed, and sweetly soft.

Cats In Love

26 Jun

I found the following piece of art at my parents’ house this past week; I’m guessing that this masterpiece was created around age five.

Some people think that little girls dream about what their weddings will look like when they grow up.  I apparently was looking forward to not my own wedding, but of a wedding between my cat, Patches, and an unknown male cat-panion.

Weekend Update!

25 Jun

Happy Monday, beauties!

What awesome activities made up your weekend?   I was lucky enough to have a long weekend that started in a cabin in Wisconsin.  Swimming, hot tub-ing, sailing, and eating made up the bulk of my too-short cabin stay.

The remainder of the weekend was spent at River’s Edge Music Festival.  Evan and I were excited to bask in the sun and see acts like Tool and the Flaming Lips.

From the Flaming Lips set.

One of the most magical moments of the festival was when dozens of large, brightly colored balloons were released into the sky during the Flaming Lips set.  The balloons were accompanied by a flurry of multi- colored confetti.  The array of beautiful colors across the bright blue sky put a huge smile on my face for the rest of the day.

I told you I smiled for the rest of the day.

I absolutely needed a relaxing and joyful weekend and am so glad I was able to spend it surrounded by great people, great weather, and great music.

What made you smile this weekend?

Friday Four!

22 Jun

Friday Four is a collection of (you guessed it) four interesting videos, photos, links, etc., that I hope get you pumped up for the weekend.

Happy Friday, beauties!  Are you pumped for the weekend?  I’ve started mine early by making my way to a cabin in Wisconsin.

Here’s some fun to get you ready for the weekend:

  • An adorable lamb jumping on a bed?  Yes, please!
