Say hello to our newest Pretty Lady, Dayna!

Ladies and gents, meet the lovely Dayna.  This super lovely lady hails from the state of Minnesota but is currently living in Austin where she is studying Public Health Nursing at the University of Texas.  I met Dayna when I was in middle school though a mutual friend and immediately warmed to her bright, loving nature and gigantic, welcoming smile.  You know those people who say the most random and hilarious statements in the middle of a conversation?  The comments that leave you with tears streaming down your face  because you are laughing so hard?  That’s Dayna.  She is awesome.  When she’s not spending time studying Nursing she loves to bike, brew beer, and craft.  A natural beauty, Dayna is a great candidate for Pretty Lady.  In her own words, here are three of Dayna’s favorite products:

  • Apple Cider Vinegar It leaves you feels refreshed, and is good for the body both externally and internally.  I try to put it in salad dressing to make sure it is a part of my diet, and dilute it with water as a face wash.  It is a natural remedy for acne. I especially like how it makes my face tingle.
  • Aveda Mosscara  Organic mascara made with Icelandic moss. It goes on really smooth, and gives definition to the lashes without being chunky or too harsh.

There you have it!  Dayna’s top three for natural babe-ness.

Say hello to our newest Pretty Lady, Yasmine!

Ladies and gents, meet the lovely Yasmine.  This Duluth-born beauty is soon-to-be pursuing her Masters in Urban Planning from Hunter College in this small-town named New York City.  In addition to spending time simply being awesome,  Yasmine can also be found knitting, not eating gluten, and blogging about urban planning.  Yasmine and I both worked at a local coop that happens to have a sizable health and body care section, so I knew she’d have some lovely products to share with you.  In her own words, here are four of Yasmine’s top beauty secrets:

  • Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Rose Frankly, I’m bad at make up. I’m bad at picking colors and I’m bad at putting it on, but this

Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm will not give you this effect. Sorry, Robert Smith.

stuff goes on like chap stick and gives a polished lip without making me feel like Robert Smith.

  • Argan Oil I have always struggled to control my very thick, wavy, coarse hair. In the winter it gets incredibly dry and in the summer gets frizzy. But if I apply a dime sized amount of argan oil to my wet hair, it becomes easy to work with, smooth, and retains its natural wave in a way that makes people think I did something fancy to myself.
There you have it!  Yasmine’s top four for staying healthy and beautiful.
Thank you, Yasmine!

Say hello to our newest Pretty Lady, Erin!

Erin and her baby, Paisley.

Ladies and gents, meet the lovely Erin.  This Wisconsin born beauty has a PhD in Biomedical Engineering and currently works as a Senior Scientist in the breezy city of San  Francisco.  When not spending time with her fiance, Tom, and her gorgeous feline friend, Paisley, Erin likes to spend her time planning her wedding, reading teen fiction on her Kindle, and engineering cool science projects with kids at the Lawrence Hall of Science.   She also happens to be a connoisseur of natural products.  In her own words, here are three of Erin’s top beauty secrets:

  • Bariani Olive Oil Company Face & Body Cream As a chemical engineer, I should love chemicals, right?  While I’m fond of them in the lab, I don’t love them on my body.  When I see an ingredient label with 35 things, I want to know what they are all doing and why they’re necessary.  My answer was to simplify and look for products with a few natural ingredients that made sense.  My favorite face and body lotion is Bariani Face & Body Lotion, which is sold just steps from my apartment at the Berkeley Farmers’ Market!   This lotion has only 3 ingredients (plus myrrh for the scented variety, which I highly recommend!)  Like a true engineer, I love to tinker, so naturally I asked, “How difficult could it be to just make this myself?” Answer: not very.  If you’re the tinkering type, try this simple recipe.  The best part is that it’s totally customizable!  Add your scent of choice, up the water to thin it out, or make a thicker lotion with more oil or beeswax.
  • The Oil Cleansing Method I’ve battled oily skin all of my life.  One day I had this crazy thought that maybe my constant need to exfoliate was not due to clogged pores, but dry skin.  I started using a heavy moisturizer, and to my surprise, it didn’t turn my face into a large grease ball; it actually made it LESS oily.  Looking into this phenomenon, I discovered the oil cleansing method.  The gist is this:  You never need to wash your face.  You just wipe it with oil, and it exchanges the fresh oil for the dirty oil on your face.  This prevents your face from drying out at the hands of harsh cleansers and thus lessens your face’s desire to produce oil to compensate for the dryness.  This method might not be for everyone, but it works amazingly well for me.  It even decreased the size of the gigantic pores on my nose!  I use a mixture of olive, jojoba, and castor oil.
  •  California Baby Calendula Shampoo and Body Wash I have blonde hair that tended to get oily about 24 hours post-washing.  I was an avid dry shampoo user (the powdered kind, not the aerosol), and this allowed me to control the oil at my roots.  The rest of my hair, however, was quite dry and looked like it could use some hydration. I ended up going ‘low poo’ with California Baby Calendula Shampoo and Body Wash.  This shampoo is sulfate-free, so it doesn’t dry out your scalp and hair.  After a few months of using it as my only hair product, I  can wait almost a week between washes with no sign of oil!  Being a minimalist, I love having only one product for my hair and knowing that it is not coating my golden locks in silicone (a common component of shampoos, conditioners, and all things ‘beauty’ related — look for ‘dimethicone’ on the ingredient list).  To add some shine and combat dryness, I massage coconut oil into my hair and shampoo the excess away.  You can leave it on overnight or for just an hour or so.  It smells delicious and actually helps repair your hair’s cuticle rather than just coating it.
There you have it!  Erin’s top three for staying healthy and beautiful.

Have you tried going ‘low poo’ or ‘no poo’?

Meet MargitMae’s newest Pretty Lady, Nicky!

Nicky is a sassy, lovely Development Support Lead hailing from the fine city of Minneapolis.  She is ridiculously hilarious and shares MargitMae’s passion for the band Hanson (no judgement, please).  She spends her time hanging out with her badass dog Ninja, carousing around the city, and keeping the world up to date via Twitter.

I met Nicky through a mutual friend; I remember attending a party at her house, using the bathroom, and noting that she used many of the same natural products that I love.  Don’t worry – I didn’t go through medicine cabinets and behind the bathroom curtains, but did note what was placed out near the sink.  Still think I’m a creep?  Tough luck.  In any case, I asked Nicky to share some of her favorite products.  In her words, here are her top three:

  • Coconut Oil  For skin, for hair, for cooking… I use it on my hands and body for moisture and it also smells delicious. All natural! It’s also fabulous for makeup removal (the only thing that can really get eyeliner off of me) and if you need to make a chocolate ganache … it works for that, too! Or leave it in your hair and then wash it out when you need a moisture-boost!
  • Earth Science A-D-E Creamy Cleanser I use Earth Science A-D-E Creamy Cleanser to wash my face and Earth Science Almond Aloe Moisturizer
which comes in an unscented version. I love scentless products since my skin is super-sensitive and doesn’t do well with smells. I also just can’t stand having a ton of smelly products on me. I’ve never had a problem with these products in terms of allergic reactions (which often happens to me!) and they are natural and light so you don’t feel like you’ve got a heavy layer on your skin after moisturizing.
  • The other product I swear by is my little soap scrubby thing, New England Naturals Earthline Exfoliating Sisal Soap Saver Bag,  that I’ve now been using instead of body wash for the last few years paired with a natural soap. I got the soap scrubber from Prairie Apothecary at the Uptown Market and paired with any natural soap product it is THE BEST THING EVER. I go to the Wedge and pick out one of their natural soap bars and put it in the soap baggy and the result is lathery cleanliness! I was tired of flowery body washes and wanted to use a natural soap but I don’t like just using bar soap on it’s own. This combo is my favorite. My top pick for soaps is SunLeaf Natural’s  OrangeGinger!

Thank you for sharing, Nicky!

Meet our newest Pretty Lady, Lori!

Lovely Lori is a Twin Cities resident who works as a  research analyst in the property tax division of the Minnesota Department of Revenue by day, and as a super blogger by night.  You can visit her in her online home,  A Little Slice of Special, where she blogs about all things lovely!  From cute vintage clothing to make-up tutorials to cute photos of her cadre of pets, Lori’s blog will bring a ray of sunshine to your day.

As a huge lover of animals, Lori is committed to using cruelty-free products.  In her own words, here are Lori’s Top 3 Beauty Products that keep her looking gorgeous.

  • Urban Decay Dew Me Moisturizing Makeup Setting Spray Besides being certified Vegan, supported by the CICC and PETA, and thus cruelty free, this is quite possibly the greatest tool in my beauty stash. Besides keeping my makeup on, it leaves it looking dew-y and fresh and I’ve seriously had this bottle for over a year, it only takes a few spritzes and you’re good to go! It’s pricey but well worth it!
  • e.l.f. Essentials Eyelid Primer in Champagne e.l.f.’s eye primer is pretty much the deal of the century. Much like Urban Decay it’s PETA approved and Cruelty Free and frankly, it works just as well as UD’s primer potion and it only costs a bit over $1. For real. You only need a dab, it’s pretty sheer but it really hold color well and it just generally feels good on your skin.
  • Lush Full of Grace Moisturizing Bar Confession – I have never really been able to use moisturizers. I had never been able to find one that actually improved my skin. Some made it feel too greasy, created shine, or made me break out. When I found lush, a company that doesn’t test on animals, and has a lot of vegan products, I knew I needed to at least give one of their face moisturizers a go. I ended up choosing full of grace. It’s actually considered a face serum, it’s for sensitive skin, preservative free, and it’s primarily made from portobello mushrooms (neat, right?!). It does exactly what I need and makes my skin feel and smell incredible!!!

There you have it!  Lori’s Top 3!  While these brands aren’t certified as organic, all of Lori’s products rate at a 4 or under at EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetic’s Database and are cruelty free!  I love her commitment to researching and finding products that align with her values.

How much research do you do before selecting products?
